History of the Youth Group

INTRODUCTION

In 1990 a few friends got together and discussed starting up a Dahisara Youth Group. It was decided that each one would donate £100 to kick off the initial funds.

These people were:

Bhimji Mayani Shanti Pindoria
Mansukh Mayani Govind Limbani
Devji Mayani Velji Limbani
Mukesh Pindoria Kanti Khimani
Dhanji Pindoria Jayendra Mayani
Mahesh Mayani

However, these funds were only sufficient for the initial hire of the hall at Kingsbury High School, Bacon Lane. We needed more funds to purchase equipment, such as nets, footballs and shuttlecocks etc. We approached the publicans of Dahisara Gham who kindly donated more funds. At the same time one of the members of KV Construction donated the purchase of ALL initial equipment.

Since we raised more funds than required, we agreed free membership for under 16’s for the first 5 years.

SPORTS ACTIVITIES

As membership grew to approximately 40 in 1992, the venue was changed to the University of Westminster at Northwick Park. We extended the time for activities to 4 hours allowing us to play, volleyball, badminton, football and occasionally indoor cricket.

The next couple of year’s membership took a little dip and so did the finances.

To attract new members we agreed that the invitation for membership was open to other gham people.

For the first time we introduced a fee of £25 for the under 16’s.

To date we have just fewer than 60 members, and the main sports we play are badminton and football.

There are currently annual tournaments held for badminton and football which include five other gham's.

The pictures show the Dahisara team competing in the July 2004 6 gham badminton tournament played at Meghpur home ground at Stonebridge Park.

We also organised an Award Ceremony Evening at the end of the season to give out trophies to the winners and runners up. Members from each gham were chosen to hand out the trophies to the winners.

In 2004, a cricket tournament was held in which we reached the final but were runners up.

In the past we have hired a football trainer and a badminton coach.

ENTERTAINMENT

We held our first Dinner and Dance at the Clay Oven in May 2000 and our 2nd at Brent Town Hall in 2002. Both were successful evenings with everyone enjoying themselves.

The Youth Group are also involved in organising the raffle at our gham functions.

Up until 1998 we use to organise an annual trip to the seaside. We now organise children’s activities at the annual summer function, but with so many activities we do not seem to have sufficient volunteers.

KEY INVOLVEMENTS

We are not only committed to sporting activities and entertainment we are also helping the main committee with music, stage décor etc.

In 1995 we were the first Kanbi’s to organise a mass blood donation. The one day session collected an amazing 200 pints of blood. We all surprised that majority of the donors were female. It looks like the men were too afraid of the dreaded needle. Ever since then, many have become regular donors donating blood at their local Blood Clinics

With Dahisara gham members and with help of SKSS Temple Kenton we helped many of the construction industry to obtain CCS cards that are now required by law on most building sites.

The gham also took part in a research test at the Northwick Park Hospital to understand why cholesterol levels are high in the Asian community. 600 participants were involved and some had to be turned down to the research restricted to a certain number. Too many ladwa’s is really going to help you!!

The Youth Group initiated the Dahisara.com website which enables everyone to view activities and pictures involved with the Dahisara Mitramandal.

SUMMARY

Many members have been saying that we require more entertainment for the children aged 5 and above. So those interested in giving us ideas and of course volunteering to keep them entertained – please email us at youth@dahisara.com
